What if every word you read is a sentence which determines the fate of a nation? So that’s the question Suzerain (developed by Torpor Games, Berlin and available on Android) challenges us to answer. We become the President of the fictional Sordland (inspired by some elements of Cold War politics), and we feel the leadership thrust upon us from the very first. We move through richly written dialogues with cabinet ministers, advisers and foreign leaders, and have to make several multiple choice decisions, that reverberate throughout the story. We have a faltering economy to manage, international threats looming and a constitution to change, corruption to deal with, and our personal values, family and oath of office to balance. No two playthroughs are ever the same, with more than 400,000 words of branching, with nine major endings. Torpor Games also published a full expansion, Suzerain: Kingdom of Rizia, in which we are a newly crowned King and the entire right to explore a new corner of the universe. The autosave function puts every option on the table, ensuring it remains really tense throughout. Gaining a sense of what’s happening is rewarded either in a reformist or authoritarian way or a combination of both, depending on how you play it out, with Suzerain offering narrative depth, political strategy and moral complexity on mobile.
